This elegant vase from the Banko ware tradition is beautifully adorned with numerous crane motifs, symbolizing longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture. It comes presented in a finely crafted wooden box, enhancing its value as both a collectible and a gift.
Banko ware, originating in Mie Prefecture during the mid-Edo period, was founded by Nunami Rouzan, who inscribed his works with the phrase “Banko Fueki”—meaning “eternally unchanging.” This sentiment continues to define the tradition today. Banko ware is known for its semi-porcelain quality, bridging the refined delicacy of porcelain with the warmth and texture of earthenware.
This piece was created by Shimizu Suigetsu, a third-generation artist who has exhibited at the prestigious Nitten Exhibition and has presented his works to the Imperial Family, including during the enthronement ceremony of the previous Emperor. His creations were also featured at the 2016 Ise-Shima G7 Summit dinner, showcasing his artistry on an international stage.
