This Kyoto lacquerware bowl was crafted by Zohiko (Nishimura Hikobei). The bowl features a black base with red and gold accents. On the underside, there is a mark with an elephant illustration accompanied by the kanji for "Hiko." It comes with a wooden box.
Zohiko is a prestigious Kyoto lacquerware brand that began in 1661 under the name "Zoge-ya" (Ivory Shop). Since the 1700s, the brand has supplied products to the Imperial Family. Zohiko also focused on exporting its wares early on and participated in the Paris Expositions in 1925 and 1936.
