When the lid is closed, this piece appears to be a simple, traditional black lacquerware bowl. However, opening the lid reveals a vibrant maki-e (a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique that involves decorating the surface of lacquered objects with metallic powder) artwork in gold and blue, depicting five scenes from Katsushika Hokusai’s "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji." The interior of the bowl is finished in a warm brown lacquer. The bowl comes with a wooden box with the artist's signature stamp.
