This Nagoya folding fan features the powerful calligraphy of Wa (和), meaning harmony, written by Japanese calligrapher Bihō Yamauchi. Nagoya is recognized, alongside Kyoto, as one of Japan’s two major centers of traditional folding fan production. This functional spirit remains a defining characteristic of Nagoya fans today.

The craft of Nagoya Sensu dates back to the 1750's in Owari Nagoya and is distinguished by its integrated technique of bamboo shaping, paper preparation, and mounting. These three elements are traditionally executed in close harmony, resulting in fans that are durable, well-balanced, and comfortable to use.
