Kawatsura Lacquerware Soup Bowl Set – Ivy Motif in Red & Black
Kawatsura Lacquerware Soup Bowl Set – Ivy Motif in Red & Black
川連漆器 夫婦 吸物椀 蔦
This exquisite set of red and black soup bowls features a graceful ivy vine motif, symbolizing vitality and good fortune in Japanese tradition. Ivy is known for its upward-reaching growth and enduring strength, making it a beloved design in auspicious occasions.
Crafted by skilled artisans using the Kawatsura lacquerware tradition from Akita Prefecture, each bowl is finished with the “hana-nuri” technique—a meticulous brush application of lacquer without polishing. This allows the natural flow of the lacquer to create a soft, organic sheen with a gentle texture unique to handcrafted pieces.
The lidded design helps retain warmth and aroma, making it ideal for serving soups and broths. When the lid is turned over, a delicate gold maki-e ivy leaf appears inside, offering a hidden moment of beauty and refinement. The body is made from natural wood, layered with multiple coats of pure urushi lacquer, providing both elegance and durability.
Unlike plastic, lacquerware naturally resists heat transfer, keeping the bowl comfortably warm to hold while maintaining the temperature of the contents inside.
