Lacqurerware Sake Cup (Hidehira-Nuri, Sakazuki)
秀衡塗「塗盃 秀衡」
This vibrant sake cup exemplifies the refined artistry of Hidehira-nuri, a traditional lacquerware craft from Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture. The rich vermilion surface is adorned with the signature Hidehira gold foil pattern, featuring diamond-shaped gold leaf and elegant hand-painted brushwork.
The origins of this style trace back to the 12th century, when Hidehira Fujiwara, a powerful ruler and patron of the arts, invited artisans from Kyoto to Hiraizumi. There, they developed a distinctive lacquerware tradition that combined refined Kyoto aesthetics with local materials and techniques, creating the enduring beauty of Hidehira-nuri.
Each cup is finished using the hana-nuri method, in which the lacquer is applied by hand and left unpolished, allowing the natural brush texture and warmth of urushi to shine through. The result is a gentle, organic sheen that reflects both craftsmanship and artistry.
Beyond its visual splendor, this cup is also highly functional—perfect for festive occasions such as New Year’s celebrations, weddings, or elegant gatherings. It is built on a honkataji wooden base, known for exceptional durability and stability in fine lacquerware.
