This is a set of five assorted small plates featuring traditional designs that represent the rich history of Kutani ware, primarily produced from the Edo to Meiji periods. Each plate showcases a different classic style which are essential to understanding the tradition and evolution of Kutani ware.
Ko-Kutani (around 1650–1700):
Considered the origin of Kutani ware, this style features bold motifs painted in greens, yellows, purples, and deep blues, often with a central motif placed in the middle of the dish.
Yoshidaya (1818–1829):
Known for its vivid use of five colors—yellow, green, red, purple, and blue—creating vibrant and expressive designs.
Mokubei (1805–1817):
Developed by Mokubei Aoki, this style features fine linework and red-painted porcelain with depictions of figures, characterized by delicate and elegant compositions.
Iidaya (1830–1845):
Distinguished by intricate red linework and graceful gold accents, with bold and modern brushstrokes.
Shoza (1860–1880):
Created by Shoza Kutani, this style is famous for the refined “Kutani Gosai” (five-color palette), depicting luxurious scenes of flowers, birds, people, and landscapes.
These designs are iconic representations of Kutani’s artistic legacy and are presented in a custom wooden box.
