High Grade Decorative Kyoto Folding Fan Wisteria with Fan Stand
高級飾り京扇子 藤/台付
This high-class decorative fan represents the refined tradition of Kyoto fan-making, beautifully adapted for the modern age. The origin of the folding fan is said to trace back to Kyoto, where wooden tablets used for record-keeping were bound together—eventually inspiring the creation of the fan.
The earliest known folding type was the five-ribbed kawahori-sen (“bat fan”), which appeared during the Heian period (794–1185). While the originals were large ceremonial pieces, this modern interpretation preserves their graceful form in a refined, display-friendly size.
This fan features five black-painted bamboo ribs and a hand-painted design by a Japanese-style painter on the front, while the reverse side is finished in silver with no pattern. Its long, elegant form (approximately 15 inches wide) makes it ideal as a statement display piece that captures both tradition and artistry.
A matching bamboo stand is included, allowing the fan to be displayed with sophistication in homes, tea rooms, or galleries.
