Echizen-nuri Lacquerware Document Box
Echizen-nuri Lacquerware Document Box
With a history spanning over 1,500 years, Echizen-nuri is one of Japan’s most esteemed lacquerware traditions, celebrated for its elegance, durability, and refined artistry. This document box exemplifies the mastery of Echizen artisans, combining a dignified simplicity with a luxurious presence.
The design features a hand-painted maki-e landscape, delicately applied with gold and colored powders to depict mountains, flowing water, and seasonal motifs. Each line is drawn with precision, reflecting the depth and sophistication of traditional Japanese aesthetics.
The box is finished with the Tamenuri (layered lacquer) technique, in which a red undercoat is applied and then covered with a translucent black lacquer. Over time, as the upper layer matures and becomes more transparent, the red hue gradually emerges, enriching the overall depth of color. This natural transformation is highly prized, as it enhances the beauty of the piece with years of use.
In Japan’s cultural history, a fumibako(document box) was traditionally used to store letters, poetry, and important writings, serving as a refined object that reflected the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. Today, it continues to be cherished not only as a functional item but also as a work of art that conveys the elegance of classical Japan.
