Banko Ware Golden Crane Pattern Vase
Banko Ware Golden Crane Pattern Vase
萬古焼 金彩鶴文壺
This elegant vase is a fine example of Banko ware, adorned with graceful crane motifs and presented in a traditional wooden box.
Banko ware originated in the mid-Edo period in present-day Mie Prefecture, founded by Nunami Rōzan, who stamped his works with the phrase “Banko Fueki”—meaning “eternally unchanging”—to symbolize his wish that the tradition would last forever. Known for its semi-porcelain quality, Banko ware bridges the strength of ceramics with the refinement of porcelain.
This piece was created by the third-generation artist Shimizu Suigetsu, who has been selected for the prestigious Nitten exhibition. His works have been presented to the Imperial Family, including at the enthronement ceremony of the previous Emperor, and were also featured in the toasts at the 2016 Ise-Shima G7 Summit dinner.
