Wajima Lacquer Spoon

Wajima Lacquer Spoon

輪島塗 匙

This is a slightly longer, matte-finish Wajima lacquerware spoon. It has a beautiful curve and is extremely lightweight.

Wajima lacquerware, crafted in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is celebrated for its exceptional durability and beauty. The creation process begins with a wooden base that is carefully reinforced with a cloth layer, known as nuno-gise, using a blend of raw lacquer and rice paste. This base is then fortified with multiple thick layers of an undercoat made from raw lacquer, rice paste, and a special powder derived from clay found on Mount Komine, near Wajima. This meticulous process ensures the strength that Wajima lacquerware is known for. What truly sets Wajima lacquerware apart is its attention to detail in the painting process. With over 20 steps and as many as 124 manual processes, each piece is crafted with incredible care, making it not only resilient but also repairable. Even if it becomes chipped or damaged, Wajima lacquerware can be restored. This dedication to quality, rather than opting for cheaper production methods, has solidified Wajima lacquerware's reputation as a brand that values tradition and craftsmanship above all else.
