Ōmi Sensu are traditional Japanese folding fans crafted in Shiga Prefecture, using Takashima fan ribs (Takashima Senkotsu)—exceptionally high-quality bamboo ribs that account for over 90% of all fan ribs produced in Japan. Known for their strength, flexibility, and precision, these ribs are essential to smooth opening and comfortable use.

Takashima ribs are also used in Kyō Sensu (Kyoto folding fans), where they are combined with refined washi paper and elegant hand-painted designs. Kyō Sensu typically feature 25 to 35 ribs, while high-end examples may use 45 or even 60 ribs. A higher number of ribs creates a more delicate structure and a smoother, more graceful motion, but also requires greater skill and labor, making such fans more valuable.

Ōmi Sensu, by contrast, emphasize practicality and regional character. Designs often feature simple, functional aesthetics or motifs inspired by Shiga—such as imagery related to Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, or Ōtsu-e, a traditional folk art style known for its bold, expressive illustrations. Some Ōmi Sensu are completed entirely within Shiga, from rib production to final assembly, reflecting a tradition rooted in everyday life and enduring craftsmanship.
